The SRCM Three Stage Fail-Safe Mechanism

Unlike the OTO or BREDA Mod.35 hand grenades, the SRCM incorporates a unique shutter safety designed to render the grenade harmless in the event of a mis-fire.
The shutter is actuated by impact and the function controlled by a cut in the side wall of the housing.

Mechanical Configuration - Ready.

The fly-off lever is held in place by the pull strip and safety bar.

The path between the primer and the firing pin is blocked.

The safety bar prevents motion of the shutter which is held below the sear at positon "A".

"Pin" Pulled - Grenade Thrown.

The fly-off lever departs and withdraws the safety bar.

The path between the primer and firing pin is clear.

The creep spring/pusher plate presses downward on the shutter and the HE capsule below, keeping the primer away from the firing pin. The shutter remains at position "A".

Impact

The HE capsule pushes the shutter tab up and off the sear.

The shutter rotates, pulled to point "B" by the long spring where it stops. At this point, if the grenade has been thrown with enough force, the HE capsule continues moving toward the firing pin, piercing the primer which detonates the grenade.

Fail-Safe

If the grenade does not hit with enough force, the creep spring pushes the shutter back, down to the long slot where the coil spring pulls and rotates the shutter further (Point "C"). This closes the path between the firing pin and primer, rendering the grenade safe.

At this point the grenade cannot be used again, unless the shutter is reset maually.
