The Japanese 81mm Infantry Mortar was an effective weapon. Under test conditions, the Type 100 H.E. shell produced approximately 600 fragments, each with an initial velocity of about 2,500 f.p.s., or about that of a typical rifle bullet. Each exploding round had an effective lethal radius of about 15 or 20 yards. One can imagine the tremendous wounding potential of a continuous barrage of mortar fire! | |

Note the pull ring at the fuze. This is not a safety pin, but rather a pull tab used to remove the tin transit cover enclosing the fuze. |
